French Onion Tart Recipe
Tarte A L'Oignon

A classic onion tart recipe which gives you a substantial meal for lunch or supper. This one is tasty at anytime of the year - cold with salads in the summer or hot straight from the oven to warm you on a cold winters day.
Serves 5 - 6
Ingredients
• 1 Partly cooked pastry shell - please visit the
Patisserie
where you will find the recipe and instructions to make the shell.• 1 lb (450gms) onions, finely sliced • 2oz (50gms) butter • 3 eggs - free range if you can get these • 1 cup (1/2 pint) thick/heavy cream • 1/2 cup (2ozs/50gms) grated gruyere cheese • Grated nutmeg • 2 teaspoons thyme leaves • Salt and pepper to taste
Method
• Pre-heat your oven to 180C (350F/Gas 4) • Your pastry shell should be just cooked but still pale in colour. • Melt the butter in a heavy based pan and cook the onions gently until they are just cooked and golden brown in colour. • Stir in the thyme leaves and leave to cool. • Whisk the eggs lightly then whisk in the cream . • Add the cheese and the salt and pepper to taste. • Fill the pastry shell with the onions. • Pour the egg and cream mixture over the onions. • Bake for about 30 - 45 minutes or until golden brown and the egg mixture has puffed up.
This onion tart is sure to be a favourite! It is so tasty and will go down well with a green salad and a glass of your favourite wine. It is also so easy to make and is a very economical meal for a hungry family!
